- The changing face of contemporary
political protest
Has political protest become just a personal matter?
In an age when fewer and fewer people vote, when it is
commonly believed that the world is out of control and
that there is little that we ordinary citizens can do
to influence our destiny, protest seems to be increasingly
characterized by individual actions.
Over the past few years I have been documenting contemporary
political protest and I am continually struck by the extraordinary
inventiveness and creativity that individuals bring to
demonstrations. At the same time I wonder whether this
emphasis on individual response may possibly say more
about how we feel about ourselves rather than what we
think of the issues at stake.
